Power fearing

I have just come from the Vauxhall Owners Network where I have been checking how many other complaints there have been regarding the Electric Power Steering failure. We purchased our Meriva in August 2005 and we took out an extended warranty with the sellers. This was to begin when the Vauxhall Warranty ended. Within a few weeks of the purchase we were worried that there was a mechanical problem with the car as the EPS light would come on and the Power Steering would go. As we are both disabled and my husband has limited use of his left arm, power steering was an essential part of the vehicle for us. We also found that within 6 months we needed to buy new tires, this happened for several years until we were advised to have the Four Wheel Alignment looked into. We approached our local Network Q for advice and were told that it would cost us quite a considerable sum of money for them to investigate these faults. We had taken out the extended warranty but we could get no response from them. The car has now cost over £1,000 in tyres (in the first 2 years) and we are going to have to lose money we can't afford to change to a reliable car. Every time we go out the EPS light comes on and we lose the power steering and neither of us are strong enough to manoeuvre the diesel model of the Meriva without it. Is there anything which can be done about this problem as we believe quite a large number of people have suffered with the same problem. We also have the engine cutting out if the revs drop below a certain level that can be very inconvenient when in traffic. I would be happy to have any information that is available.

If every Meriva owner with the problem notified www.vosa.gov.uk
then VOSA would be forced to order a vehicle safety recall. Unfortunately too many prefer to grumble on forums rather than make the official complaint. Also complain to BBC Watchdog, and let's see Nicky Campbell interrogate VOSA as to why it has not issued a safety recall for such a well-known and well-documented safety problem. Your second problem of cutting out in traffic is due to the diesel particulate filter getting clogged up because you are not driving the car far enough for it to passively regenerate.
