Scrappage scam?

I note your response R.W. of Wiltshire regarding the Government Scrappage Scheme, and in particular the policy of crushing perfectly good cars. I too subscribe to the school of "if it ain’t broke, don't fix it". I am currently running a P Reg VW Passet 110 TDI, which I purchased in 1997. It has turned out to be the best car I have had. At 137,000 miles on the clock it remains in good condition (no corrosion, the eleven year anti corrosion warranty did exactly what it said on the tin), returns fifty plus to the gallon, and is a pleasure to drive. Even more interesting is that the car still has the original clutch and exhaust system. The only downside is having to change the cam belt every 60,000 miles, and for this reason my next car when this one reaches the end of the road will regrettably not be a WV Passat.

Many thanks for your e-mail. It now transpires that instead of being scrapped, a lot of cars certificated as scrapped are going to Poland. I had reports from mainland Europe. Then I actually saw one of the transporters on the M3. Others are being dismantled for spares. No big deal. A certificate of destruction and a certificate of export always used to amount to pretty much the same thing. And, if it wasn’t for all the administrative messing around, the government would more than it gives out of scrappage anyway. Chancellor Darling deserves a bit of credit for that.
