Registration fate

During a holiday in France our Renault Megane Cabriolet Coupe was written off in an accident on June 23rd 2005. We never saw it again. This car had our private plate on it. T111 JSH. In November 2005 we bought another Megane, same colour, same model, and put our private plate on it. I'm now trying to sell this car, but dealerships keep telling me it is 'scrapped'. I have been told the two cars are coming up with the same chassis number, which obviously is bringing up problems. I hope you can help me as my I am 80 years of age and my husband died in December last year.

I'm afraid you will have lost entitlement to 'T111 JSH' when the car was written off and ceased to exist. You were actually committing an offence by simply putting the reg on another car. The procedure for transferring a reg is described at www.dvla.gov.uk and the relevant form 317 is downloadable from there.

Can I transfer the private reg from a car I put into storage (SORN) five years ago? It had an MoT when put into storage but hasn't had one since. The car could be recommissioned and MOTd quite quickly...
