Hyu and CRDI
My wife and I test drove the Hyundai i30 Comfort 1.4 petrol and 1.6 CRDi diesel last Sunday, and preferred the diesel for its power, lower emissions, taller gearing and motorway cruising. The problem is (and we’re only interested in the Comfort models) is that Hyundai has a list price difference of £1,800. Added to this is a manufacturer incentive of £1,000 off the diesel, but £1,600 off the petrol, bringing the difference to £2,400 OTR. Not withstanding our preference for the diesel version and the fact that its likely to give real world economy figures of 20mpg more than the petrol version, plus the diesel now qualifies for £35 a year road tax and it’ll be worth more when we eventually come to sell; if we were to keep the diesel version for 10 years would this prove the better car, despite an annual mileage of around 8,000 max? What I fear doing is being enticed by the cheaper to purchase petrol model, only to wish within 3 -6 months that I’d gone for the diesel, based on the fact that that we intend to keep the car long-term. Have you any thoughts/ feedback on the respective engines to help sway my decision? Or should I wait for a nearly new example, where the price differential has narrowed somewhat?

The real world mpg difference is more likely to be 10mpg than 20mpg. All Hyundai 1.4 and 1.6 petrol or diesel are chain cam, so no worries there. Diesel is dearer than petrol and will remain so. A diesel could give trouble with its EGR, DPF, turbo, intercooler and dual mass flywheel, none of which are a problem with a petrol engine.
The ES is probably a better buy then the Comfort for just £300 more.
