Tyre consequences

I purchased a Ford Mondeo Titanium X TDCI 140 5 door hatchback on May 02 2008 and to date am very pleased with it. I took it into my local Ford main agent Polar Ford Wilmslow for a 12-month service with a mileage of 6,791. Imagine my surprise on being telephoned to say that the car required two new tyres at the front as the tread was below three on the inside of each tyre. The tracking and alignment were OK. Have you had any other instances of this reported and could you advise me as to what normal size tyres I could use instead of the low profiles fitted and would this affect the handling etc.

The inside treads and shoulders may have been ripped by the chamfered edges of speed cushions, many of which are now crumbling and ripping the inner shoulders and sidewalls of tyres to shreds. Motorway blowouts as a result can lead to multiple death crashes, so this deserves much wider publicity than I can give it. To fit deeper profile tyres you need to fit smaller 17" or 16" wheels. No
way around that.
