Fraught Fiesta

Last October I bought a nearly new 2008 Ford Fiesta ST150. The car at the time seemed a good deal, had an extended years warranty and was classed as a Ford Direct car, which it had been owned by Ford. Ford decided to rebuild the gearbox. However, after 2 months the bearings went in the gearbox and I had to wait 3 weeks for new parts from Germany. They would not give me a courtesy car as I was under 21 and my local dealer (Essex Ford) insurance policy did not cover anyone under 21. So I was without a car for 3 weeks. Next the power steering pump went and needed to be replaced. Now there is an engine leak. And the car is not even a year old. I have now decided to look at selling the car even if money is lost. As, although nice to drive and a lot of fun, the reliability of this Ford has been terrible and the customer service awful. I am looking at something more expensive so I know I am paying for a car that will last. I don't however know what to get. I’m looking at the new golf diesel GT or the GTI but insurance may cripple me. Do you have any suggestions of a car that is reliable, fun and fast for a 19 year old like myself?

An Abarth 500 on standard 16" wheels is a lot of fun. My ordinary FIAT 500 1.2 has been totally reliable over its first year. The Abarth has essentials like a watercooled turbo. Don't be tempted by the cheap option of 17" wheels. They ruin the handling and destroy the steering feel. Test and video test at www.honestjohn.co.uk
