Re-coil in horror

I thought your readers would be interested in the Ford Motor Co.'s quaint idea of Customer Relations. After experiencing a front coil spring breakage at only 26,000 miles on an 05 Fusion I wrote to the Company suggesting they contribute to the cost of replacing the two front coils (£200). I pointed out that my previous car, a Nissan Primera, had experienced NO component failure in 8 years and 76,000 miles of motoring, apart from the usual exhausts, brake pads etc.. This morning I received a telephone call from the customer relations dept. in Coventry. The young lady informed me that they considered the failure "fair wear and tear" and therefore would not contribute to the cost. When I asked for this to be put in writing I was told that IT WAS NOT COMPANY POLICY to put this sort of thing in writing. So, not only do they consider the failure to be fair wear and tear they do not even have the decency to reply to my letter in writing. After 30-odd years of motoring in Japanese cars without major problems, EVER, I am now trying to find a way of off-loading this miserable FORD specimen and going reliable Japanese again. No wonder Ford is losing Money.

I receive 2 - 3 e-mails of coil spring failures every day. All European makes and models. Almost none Far Eastern. This is partly due to the way European coil springs are made and installed. But the stress fracture that eventually breaks is usually set off by speed humps, speed cushions or potholes.
