Spendsible choice

I need your help please. I have around £2.5-£2.8k to spend on a 2nd hand car. I do fairly low mileage – circa 8k per year. What should I be looking for? I don’t want anything flash or thirsty, just reliable. Also, should I be looking for cars that have cambelts that need replacing? I had an old Golf that cost a lot because of this.
