Our daughter, who is about to return to the UK after a number of years abroad, is considering buying either a MINI convertible, Audi TT roadster, or an MX5. She has a budget of around £12K. Which would you recommend in terms of build quality, reliability, and depreciation?

She'll get an almost new 08 model MX5 1.8 Option pack with cloth hood and alloys for £12. They were only about £14k discounted when new. £12 buys an R52 MINI convertible, but not the latest R57. They start at £16k. £12k will also confine her to an old shape Audi TT. Lots more information in the Road Tests and in Car by Car Breakdown at www.honestjohn.co.uk
