Snow brawl

In view of the inadequate way in which the UK prepares to combat winter snowfalls on our roads, I think a change of direction is needed, we need to go into reverse and do as we did in the harsh winters of the 1960s. In the rural areas of Cumbria we had two spare wheel rims; fitted them with proper winter tyres and at the onset of winter fitted them to the drive wheels of the car and swapped them over again in the spring. It was amazing just how you could drive around with winter tyres on in quite deep snow. A skilful way of driving was adopted, not what can be witnessed on TV, cars with wheels spinning frantically going nowhere fast. Maybe the Government should invite all motorists to purchase spare wheel rims and winter tyres and fit them to all cars say early November till early March. At the sale of the car, the spares would be passed on as part of the sale. With less or no future use of salt a huge saving might be made.

I started driving in Northumberland, so I know what you are talking about. What you advocate is compulsory in parts of Germany. Every car has to have two sets if wheels and tyres. But London only gets a snowfall like this week's every 20 years. Most years hardly any snow at all. So just as equipping the whole country to cope with Arctic conditions is not economically viable, so is compelling all cars to have a separate set of soft compound winter tyres.
