A driver hit my car but wants to pay without claiming. Is this a good idea on my part?

I was reversed into in a car park recently causing minor damage, but may still be expensive as it covers both doors (on one side and the sill). The driver was a young man who admitted fault straight away. His family have suggested getting quotes from repairers outside of using the insurance companies as they think he will be penalised heavily in his renewal quote. I'm reasonably open to this suggestion but it’s been 15 years since I had a bump. I'm over 50 and have full protected NCD on my policy. Is it a good idea? Grateful for your thoughts.

Take your vehicle to your choice of repairer and ask them to provide an invoice. Provide this to the family, they often get a shock at the cost as they will have unrealistic expectations. If they agree, ask them to pay you up front prior to repair, or they can pay the repairer directly before repair. Just don't get them to pay after repair in case they change their mind. Should they reject the cost, contact your insurer and claim via them. It should not affect you if he has admitted liability, and your insurer should not share cost. If you have any fear of this, use a claims management company which will avoid that situation.
