A gentleman and a school car

I recently purchased an 18-month-old Yaris from a Toyota main dealer. I was told that it was a one-owner car. A week after taking delivery I noticed a section of the carpet in the passenger foot well had been cut away. I returned to the garage who said they had no idea what the cause was but that they would repair it. Their trimmer then inspected and said he could not repair it. I returned to the garage seeking further definitive advice on the cause of the damage (I asked them to contact the previous owner to provide such advice) and their proposal to remedy. I have now heard from the garage, firstly, that they have ceased trading and secondly that the car had been fitted with dual controls for driving instruction. They have made a financial offer to compensate although this has not been accepted. I have no doubt that if we had known the prior use we would not have bought the car. Should I take a pragmatic view and take compensation (I will obviously seek to maximise) or do I have other remedies such as rejection of the vehicle. The purchase did involve a trade in so I suspect any refund would be complicated?

The fact that the car had previously been used as a driving school car is not something the dealer was compelled to disclose to you and does not give you any automatic right of refund. So bear that in mind when negotiating. But if the garage has already ceased trading and if they have made you an offer of compensation, grab it straight away.
