Going out in slippers

Have you received reports of BMW 3 Series coupes lacking traction? Last week in Scotland my 335d completely failed to hold the road on a hill covered in compacted snow with fresh snow on top and had to be hauled out on a tow truck. Switching on/off Dynamic Traction Control made no difference. When I called my local service agent they pretty much said that rear wheel drive cars didn't like snow and ice and there was nothing that could be done. What really worries me is that the car lacked traction on slushy roads too and my wife and I have completely lost faith in its abilities and its safety. We can't afford to change the car as it is only 17 months into a 48 month PCP and RBS Freeway want nearly £30,000 to settle, which is far more than it is worth. Do you think I could sue BMW / the finance company for supplying a car that is unfit for the purpose for which it was sold? I saw old Puntos, two Ford Focuses, a VW Passat, etc all climb the hill with little or no problems.

Yes, common problem. Talk to your BMW dealer about what switching option is best to use in snow. But a lot of modern car ABS, ESP and TCR systems are completely useless in snow on summer tyres. Especially ultra low profile tyres on 18” or 19” rims. The answer is probably a switch to smaller wheels with deeper profile winter tyres for the duration. These are softer compound as well as a different tread pattern and are now compulsory in Germany. But expensive, because it means buying a second set of wheels as well.

I would appreciate your advice on the use of snow chains as the season to be miserable approaches. If the tyre treads become filled with compacted snow why don't the chains become likewise affected? In...
I have been reading about snow shoes recently. Are they a good alternative to other forms of winter products?
I have a set of winter tyres 165/70/R13/79T on a Peugeot 106 and want to know what other makes and models of cars they will fit.
