Why isn't my air con working properly?

Does my air con unit need gas and, if so, where does it go? It doesn't seem to be very good at the moment.

All car air conditioning systems need refrigerant gas. If it's leaking then it's probably due to problems with the seals. Usually caused by the air con being switched off for long periods over the winter months, which then lets the seals dry out.

How can I trust a garage charging me for an air con regas to not put the cheaper gas then charging me for the dearer gas?
A trusted AC specialist says I need a new condenser for my air conditioning unit and has quoted £400 for a replacement, with three hours needed to fit — including a re-gas. Is this a fair price?
