What's the most reliable make and model for £1500?
I'm looking at buying a stop gap car for under £1500 for my commute to work - which is a 30-mile round trip with the occasional 100 mile journey. It has to be capable of carrying two large mountain bikes on the roof, although this is an ideal and not a necessity. I generally cover around 10,000 miles per year. I'm keen to keep running costs low and have looked for cars with a chain cam and without DPFs etc. In particular, I have been looking at cars such as the Toyota Yaris and Honda Accord. I'm aware at this price point, it comes down to what has been looked after but I'd like to know if there Is one particular make, model or engine type you would recommend? Many thanks.

I'd recommend the Ford Fiesta 1.25 petrol: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/fiesta-2008/
The engine isn't quick (0-62mph takes 14 seconds) but it has a near-bulletproof reputation for reliability. It'll return 40+mpg and there are lots available for £1500/£2000. This means you can afford be quite picky on condition and spec.
