Miles per gullible

I have a Skoda Octavia 2.0TDI DSG bought new in 2005. Fault-free so far but a bit too noisy - especially road roar at speed and engine noise in town. I am thinking of changing and want a Golf sized car that is comfortable, quiet, reliable and with fair performance and economy. I only do about 10k per year so don't need a diesel, particularly as there seem to be problems with DPFs clogging and
all the extra technology required to minimise emissions - also usually £2k more expensive than petrol. I was considering the new Golf Match with the 1.4TSI engine and 7-speed DSG (I need an auto) but can't find any real information on "true" MPG. Manufacturer figures seem to bear little relation to real life motoring. The Golf seems to get good reviews for refinement and a quiet cabin. Have you any info on realistic MPG for the Golf 1.4TSi?

I got an actual 42mpg from an Ibiza 1.4 Twincharger DSG. Readers report 38 - 40mpg from the Golf 1.4 TSI 122. Applying eco driving techniques I managed to get 47.4mpg from a Polo 1.2TSI 105, while a Golf 1.2TSI 105 showed 41.4mpg over 259 miles on its readout with all sorts of people having driven it.

Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive. Nicely trimmed with great attention to detail. 1.4 TSI sweeter to drive than a diesel.
