Works car

I commute daily to London from Southampton by car and currently drive a 6-year-old 1.6 petrol Peugeot 307. Unfortunately it has recently become unreliable, costly to run and expensive on repairs. Could you suggest a reliable, comfortable and economical mid range car I could change to please. My friend has suggested a diesel Ford Focus. What do you think?
