I would like to keep you updated on the matter of potholes through reports in local and national newspapers. There have been many accounts that local councils in some areas have been forced into temporary measures to repair potholes. These include dumping sand and gravel into the holes. I don't have to tell you of the drawbacks. One is cracked windscreens caused by gravel spread all over the road. I view one of the most serious aspects of this business is of broken-up speed humps being used by drunken yobbos to pelt the police and other people at closing time. There have been documented examples of this, reported all over the country. What is the response of the local councils responsible for installing these ill-conceived monstrosities? “We are looking into the matter.” That is all they say. This is quite unacceptable. I really hope that any members of the emergency services: police, fire service members and paramedics who are injured by broken pieces of asphalt being thrown at them sue the council responsible for installing this appalling junk.

I now have a nice documentary case from a gentleman in Jersey whose garden wall was shattered by tremors through the ground from vehicles mounting and dismounting speed humps in the road outside. Shock damage to adjoining buildings is the strongest argument for removing speed humps.
