April foolery
On the 17th March my V11 dropped onto the doormat and I was surprised to see that 12 months tax for my BMW 120d (129g/km) was going to cost me £120 rather than the £90 I was expecting (for once I thought I would be winning). I went onto the DVLA website and read that the rate due was indeed £120, both in their online literature and on the renewal site itself. I therefore concluded that they must have postponed the new rates yet again and renewed online using my debit card (shame). I was very surprised, last weekend, to read in the press that rates had gone down and that the rate for my car for 12 months from the 1st April is indeed £90. I therefore emailed DVLA and enquired as to how they intend to refund my £30? I received back an email back basically saying that its the rate prevailing at the time you renew that is relevant and therefore tough. Can you remember when the rates of VED from 1st April 2010 were announced? I've searched the internet and I can't find anything concrete and I want to pursue a refund on the basis that the DVLA had good warning of this change and that both my V11 and their website should have reflected the correct/lower amount.

I got caught out by this too, but only by £5, not £30. The new rates apply from 1st April, but to qualify you have to renew the tax on 1st April or later. Catch 22. Some smirking smart ass at the Treasury will have earned himself a bonus.
