Hot and bothered

I have a 1996 Volkswagen Sharan 1.8 petrol and when it gets warm it starts juddering. It does not do it when cold, only when warm. Someone told us it could be the temperature sensor. Please could you tell me what you think it could be?

It's overheating and starting to seize. The reason could be that the engine block temp sensor/sender switch is not switching on the radiator fans. Or it could be that the timing belt driven waterpump has lost its vanes. Or another problem such as jammed coolant thermostat or a blockage in the system somewhere.
