In November we bought a Hyundai i10. The main reason for buying it was an economical runabout. In the handbook and in all the data it is advertised as doing 56.5 mpg (combined). Ours is doing 36.5mpg, we have asked our local garage to check it out and they have found the emissions are fine, but could not understand the fuel consumption so did some "homework" and came up with a web site from other furious owners:

As our other car is a Freelander and we are getting 34/36mpg from that, the Hyundai is useless to us and defeats the object of having a small, fuel-efficient car. We and many other people have been sold this car under false pretences. Do we have any comeback, such as SMMT, Office of Fair Trading, Consumer Rights? Are you aware of similar complaints?

I got over 50mpg from one and over 50mpg from a bigger i20 with the same engine. However you will find the answer here:

It has been discovered that over tightening the brake switch during production leads the ABS to become over-active so you are driving against brakes a lot and that is what destroys the economy (and the brake pads). Though obviously if the car is use a lot for short runs from cold you cannot expect to meet any of the published figures because the engine is running on enriched mixture all the time.
