Jack the Tripper

I'm running a current model 1.4 Jazz (it's my 4th Jazz) bought new in January 2009, serviced by main dealer with 38k miles now on the clock. I noticed a rattling noise on start up when cold that reduced when the clutch was disengaged - diagnosed as clutch release bearing and replaced last Thursday under warranty. Since buying the car I have never reset the computerised fuel consumption readout and last year got it up to 54.7mpg with which I was fairly pleased. (My driving is mainly motorway with virtually no stop/start town driving and I am happy to potter along at 55-60mph most of the time. From November 2009 to early January 2010 we did a number of fast runs and the readout dropped to 51.9. I nursed it back to 53.5 before the clutch bearing was replaced. When I picked the car up last Friday morning the readout was 30, which suggested that the garage had probably had the engine running with the car stationary. Imagine my surprise when after 40 miles on the motorway it was up tp 55+ and after another 50 miles at the end of the day 57+. From all this two questions:- Is it likely that the defective clutch bearing has had a negative effect on fuel economy? Is it likely that the defective bearing may have caused other wear problems, which may not materialise for some time? (I will probably keep the car for 200k miles.) As an aside as I mentioned it is my 4th Jazz and I have been pleased with them all - the latest model in particular being a huge improvement over its predecessor.

The trip mileage will have been re-set. I got called into London at 3.00am one morning, from Weybridge, to rescue a neighbour's daughter in some distress. Clear run there, mostly green lights, maximum speed 50mph (all limited, with cameras), yet the mpg indicator in my FIAT 500 1.2 petrol remained 50.8, which it had dropped to over the winter. On the way back, it suddenly started reading 60 +, so I went through the readings and saw 61.5mpg for 9 miles in Trip A and 56.2mpg for 29 miles in Trip B. What I think must have happened is I reached the maximum miles that the Trips will record (probably 5,000), so they automatically re-set, but did so when I was driving in very fuel-efficient conditions. Maybe that happened to yours.
