I currently drive a 53 plate Golf Match V and I'm thinking of changing it soon. I've spent over £1,800 on it in 14 months and I think it's time for a change. I've been pretty happy with it, particularly on our regular trips over to France, but around town the mpg is very poor, averaging around 30. My husband has a Fiesta and I was impressed with its performance in the recent heavy snow. Because we need something a bit bigger as well I was thinking of looking at a Focus. How does this compare to the Golf in your opinion? If I go for a Focus, which model would you recommend? I particularly like the heated windscreen available on Fords. Having bought the Fiesta nearly new, I think you can get a better bargain this way than with a new car, so I'd be looking to buy one about 12 months old with a lower than average mileage.

"I've spent over £1,800 on it in 14 months.” On the basis of reader feedback, that is typical of Golf ownership. A Golf gives the impression it is better built than a Focus with higher quality components, but it isn't. Hence the myth: "Few things in life are as reliable as a Volkswagen."
