Economic situation

Last November, on your advice, I used scrappage to buy a Hyundai i10 Comfort. With one exception I have been delighted with everything about the car. It is lively, perhaps too lively for an octogenarian used to a Polo 1.6 automatic for 13 years. The engine is a delight: very sweet and flexible, the gearbox easy and the handling very good for so small a car, loads of space and so on until I come to the petrol consumption. The brochure claims mpg of Urban 44.8 Extra urban 65.7 Combined 56.5. I live in the country on lanes, do not drive hard and rarely drive in urban areas. I filled the tank today with (24.17 litres = 5.316 gallons), which is the quantity that propelled the car 212 miles from the last filling a consumption of less than 40 mpg. This does not approach the claimed urban consumption let alone the claimed combined one. Previous fillings produced even heavier consumption. I will be very grateful f you can tell me have heard of other owners having such dire consumption and if you will kindly advise whether there is anything that can be done to improve the consumption.

I don't understand it. I got over 50 from the i10 1.2 Kappa and over 50 in appalling conditions from the 1.2 Kappa engine in the bigger i20. But i10s have been known to suffer a brake light switch fault that over-activates the ABS, so that could be the reason for your poor economy.
