Why will my Ford Sierra not start?

I have an issue with my 1992 Ford Sierra 1.8 diesel. It has an intermittent problem where it will occasionally not start. Any idea what the problem could be?

Check the fuel pump to see if it's working, check that fuel is getting to the engine. How old is the battery? How old is the fuel? The ignition switch might be failing - or it could be a problem with the starter motor.
