Why are exhaust fumes appearing from underneath the passenger area of my BMW?

Exhaust fumes are appearing from underneath the passenger area of my 2000 BMW 530d Touring. Any idea what could be causing this?

I would guess that on this 19-year old car the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve has probably failed.
