Charge of the lighter brigade
I have a Honda CRV, which is kept outside, and at times is not used that often. As the battery will be flat within three weeks I have recently purchased a solar-powered battery charger with a cigarette lighter plug (and a pair of crocodile clip connectors). If I put the charger on top of the dashboard and connect it to the socket I cannot see how it will charge as the socket only connects when the ignition is on. The shop who sold it assured me it would and my Honda garage assured me it would not. Using the direct battery connectors means the charger will have to be outside the car on the bonnet and I am not inclined to do that, particularly as the car is out in the open. I would be most grateful for your advice.

Unless I first checked that there was a direct connection I would not plug any kind of charger into a cigarette lighter or accessory plug of a car and expect it to charge the battery. But you could have remote charge points fitted inside the car so it does directly charge the battery.
