Does DPF regeneration make a noise?

After repeated short drives in a diesel does DPF regeneration make a noise and raise the engine rpm?

You might then get active regeneration that basically uses post injected diesel to start a fire in the DPF to burn off the soot and the noise will be the electric cooling fan coming on to try to cool the car down.
