Is it a good idea to buy a used diesel now?
I generally buy a used car with around 20k miles and run it for 6/7 years before replacing. At the moment I'm looking at buying a Mercedes E220d estate for around £20k. Is this a really bad idea? The general feeling towards diesel worries me, that it's going to be taxed off the road in the next couple of years, and banned from every city.

It's not a bad idea at all - diesels still make a lot of sense for some drivers, provided you regularly drive at 60mph+ for constant periods to allow the diesel particulate filter to regenerate. I wouldn't worry about diesels being taxed off the road... too many people own diesels for that to be a vote winner. Obviously, if you live in the middle of London or regularly drive into a major city centre, you might want to think about a petrol. There are some good deals to be had on diesels at the moment, though: www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/car-market-1/2019-06/nea.../
