Should my son add me to his insurance policy as a named driver?
Is it permissible for me to buy a car for my son and let him pay the insurance with me as a named driver?

Yes, as long as he is the main user. I actually suggest you do this to reduce the premium. The more drivers the better because it spreads the risk across the three of you and will reduce the premium.
