What's the best car for a 90-mile daily commute?

I am going to be commuting about 90 miles a day and have a £5000 budget. What car do you suggest?

That justifies a diesel but whether to get one that, for £5k, will not be EU6 depends where you will be commuting to. If it's a major city that will be imposing penalties for entry by non EU6 diesels, then better to go for an EU4 petrol that will be allowed in without penalty.

Should I buy a diesel SUV? I drive about 7,000 - 8,000 miles a year, much of it short journeys in town.
