Loved it until … disaster!

Bought new with high hopes in 2018 for the new EV technology. Beautiful drive. Minimal energy costs with home charger. Just what we hoped for. Then, just 6 years and 32,000 miles later.. disaster. Suddenly refused to start after a routine overnight charge in our garage. RAC called but failed to resolve. Towed to dealership. It took over a month for the bad news having had to have it transferred to Gateshead from Kettering for further investigation. Firstly, the diagnostic test cost us £1,250 ( yes that’s right!) with no promise of a resolution. The results can back with a list identifying a faulty PDM ( drive motor component) and a repair bill of £8,100 ( yes, unbelievable). The car has been well treated and serviced annually by the dealership. No indication anything was about to fail. Just like a lightbulb. It’s on and working, then dead. It has effectively written off a 6 year old car which looks like new, because it’s just out of warranty. At this moment of going to dispute, we have no idea if Nissan will take any responsibility for the catastrophic failure of a major component in such a short run of the car’s expected lifetime. We are hoping they have good customer relations and will update with our experience. The labour cost at Gateshead Lookers turned out to be £175 an hour. About the same as our barrister might cost if we have to go there! Message to all prospective buyers… don’t buy, lease. If you buy, get rid before the warranty expires.. or be prepared for totally unrealistic repair bills because your local EV repair shop may not actually have the necessary equipment and expertise to deal with some issues. We are devastated and without our car. We just hope Nissan UK will behave honourably and resolve the issue.
