Discussion: Running on biodiesel (DP)

>> It only takes a single misfuel you know... )

I'm actually becoming less convinced by this. An unscientific survey among diesel driving colleagues confirms a) how common misfuelling is, and b) how many of these so-called delicate common rail cars have simply been refilled with diesel, and gone on to do in one case, on a Vectra CDTi, 70,000 more miles without a single hiccup. And that car was driven on petrol until it spluttered to a halt.

I wonder if at least some of the tales of huge bills to replace pumps and injectors are little more than garages spotting an opportunity to make a few quid.

I'm not saying misfuelling never ends in disaster, or that it is anything other than a bad thing to do, but I do know that it doesn't necessarily mean curtains for the fuel system.

Discussion: The Koreans have landed (stunorthants26)

As my family now own only Japanese and Korean cars, I would say yes, the Koreans have landed although nobody noticed who was under 65 until very recently.

The gap on performance, economy and technology has all but disappeared and yet you can buy say an i20 for about £1000 less than a Fiesta, but with a far superior warranty. Its no real wonder people buy Korean cars now, its only very misplaced prejudice that stops some people.

We have three Daihatsus though, the main reason being that they have actually become a budget brand, positioned under even Hyundai or Kia. My dad loves his Materia, my wife loves her Sirion, I think the world of my Charade and my mums Hyundai - its just clicked 50k and my mum has no plans on replacing it, she wont hear of it.

These are cars for people who want a car that just needs a service every year and thats all you have to think about. Its worth something even in this throw away age.

Discussion: Golf or Octavia ? (idle_chatterer)

Well the Golf 122 drives very nicely imho, perhaps you don't really need 245PS and 400lbft to get along gracefully? (sic), I am a convert..... It's very refined / quiet too.

So now we need to get our local dealer to sharpen his pencil, offered a reasonable-ish PX since they don't sell non-VWs but no discount when even What Car suggests £1K off, (with DtD it's more like £2K). Claims of long build times but there are near-matches for spec in the country, can't have our cake and eat it but will push for a more equitable deal.

>> Hyundai is a Chaebol (Korean Large Company)
>>

Fascinating organisations Chaebols, usually highly diversified conglomerates with a 'family like' (sometimes literally) culture

However, my two-peneth on the OP's topic, I'm sure I read somewhere that VW when developing the Golf VI used the Kia Ceed as a benchmark alongside the Focus - implying (to me) that they see it as serious competition these days.

>>..Lots of money was duly spent >>

I've already pointed out the benefits of Miele quality and the 10 year warranty in the earlier thread, but obviously your other half appreciates exactly the reasons for suggesting the brand...:-)

We have the Miele Novatronic 864, at £499 the cheapest model at the time, which proves the motto that quality costs but, in the long run, works out cheaper.

Even the door catch is rated for a minimum of 60k closures, which works out at around 20 years' average use. Review at:

http://www.washerhelp.co.uk/reviews/miele-w864-review.html

Thanks for the help everyone.

Can't turn on power to machine - it immediately trips the switch in the fuse box. Had to break the top off the machine because it needed special tools which I don't have. I can now reach down to the latch mechanism on the inside and feel things moving when I pull the latch, but I can't work out how to open it. Can't find the manual, but I don't think that's going to help.

Might have to resort to brute force tomorrow :-(

Found another photo...after exhumation and ready to go.
I'm not sure if any bits were salvaged, maybe the chassis plate but I doubt that survived on this one !
I have another pic of one, finished and going off to trimmers and painters. I think I moved a few Bentley Continentals as well...for the same treatment.

http://tinyurl.com/ycopwuo

I've got a lot of photos, I used to take one of every interesting car I moved. Then my camera got nicked with a full film and I didn't bother much after that. Got quite a few of the 6R4 Metro...but that's another story.

Ted

Technical matters: 93 1.4 Front anti-roll bar bushes (CH)

Anyone out there know if it's possible to replace the end bushes on the front anti-roll bar without taking the whole thing off the car (as suggested by Mr Haynes!)? The bushes look as if they're 'driven' on to the bar at each end and, with 140,000 miles on the clock I would think they're not gonna come off without a fight! Any advice would be very welcome. (The engine is a C14SE, if it's relevant).

Or none at all !....I almost had a 'head on' this am. Driving up the A65 to Kendal at 07.40 I could just make out a large slow moving vehicle coming towards me. The car coming up fast behind it did not see it until it was too late to brake safely, and swung onto my side of the road in an effort to avoid a major rear end shunt. Fortunately, I had seen the fast approaching car headlights and I braked hard, slowing to 15 mph at most...for some reason I had assumed the worst.
It was a tractor pulling a slurry trailer...no lights at all, no rear lights or even reflectors visible...probably covered by cow muck. Typically, no police around to inform of the stupidity of the tractor driver. Gave me a very big shock just thinking about the consequences.

I moved a lot of Rollers in my self-employed recovery days.
If I could drive them, perhaps on trade plates, then I did. Driven 1926 20HP, 20/25 and most others including Silver Dawn up to Shadow. Shadows were OK but sloppy...easy to drive with a lovely ' whoof ' of power when you booted them....the whole front end lifted in the air !

Here's one I didn't drive.....I picked it up in Cambridge for a customer in Southport...I think he just wanted it for the title. He was converting them into ragtops and selling them in the US for about £250K at the time...not that he did the work, just wrote the cheques ! Double click to enlarge.

http://tinyurl.com/ycopwuo

It was a pig to load up, only a hand winch in those days....mind you, they all were !

Ted

Slightly off tangent, some while ago I enquired on here about a replacement machine. It gets lots of use....3 girls in the house...so I was delegated 'officer commanding procurement'. Lots of money was duly spent (£910 gulp) on a Miele W3922 WPS from Comet online, BUT it came with a 10 year parts & labour warranty. SWMBO thinks it is fantastic.
If you are interested look at the Miele website for current offers....they nearly always have something with this 10 year extended warranty, which, I think, represents good value for money. Most only have a 3 year warranty, and the peace of mind of a further 7 years is worth a considerable amount.
Hope this helps.

The future Mrs L covers quite a large annual mileage...currently 90k on her '07 Passat Tdi. However, one of her colleagues covers even more miles, and his Mondeo required a new clutch after 2 years and 123k miles. It was duly booked in, and he was promised a 'similar' sized vehicle to satisfy his business requirements...he carries lots of samples. Come the day, all they have is a Ka! Come the evening, he arrives main dealer to collect his car. Off he trots, but they have given him the wrong key. Transpires they have given his car an oil & filter change, and changed somebody else's clutch. Back to the Ka.
How he laughed......

Indeed it is why there are very very few companies in the world making aircraft engines. It is not something you can do in your shed.

I don't think I would want a Rolls Royce either, if I had a bit of money it would be an Aston Martin without a doubt. However if I didn't want to drive then I can't think of any where better than in the back of an extended Rolls Royce.

>> the legacy of the Rolls Royce Aero business

But that is what is left of the original Rolls Royce company now I suppose. Well RR went bankrupt I think and Vickers ended up with the car company and the aero engine part was spun off. Had an interesting chat with an ex senior employee of RR aero engines on holiday earlier this year. You then realise how long ago design work on the lift fan of that new F35 jump set started. A long time!

Not sure it survived the redevelop of Hulme years ago - the factory was long gone of course.

Sadly when VAG got annoyed they lost RR to BMW they got rid of everything at Crewe to do with Rolls Royce including cars from the museum. Everything. And then years later employed the mastermind behind BMW getting the RR name for little money as the new chief exec (Bernd Pischetsrieder).

Discussion: Rolls-Royce car company formed 103 years ago (Rattle)

I've actually seen AX 201 In all its glory. A fantastic car. Sadly RR seemed to loose it in the 1970's and never really recovered. However don't forget the legacy of the Rolls Royce Aero business I know it is a separate company but it was formed from the same original company and now they are one of the worlds largest aircraft engine makers.

Sadly in Manchester at least the only thing which remains from their history is the Midland Hotel were they originally first met.

Discussion: The Koreans have landed (nick1975)

i think this discussion is too polarised. Both trad Euro boxes and new Eastern boxes are good products. And its also a bit simplistic to talk about Korean/Jap/Euro cars. They all share common parts/suppliers anyway.

I suspect the pricing will also quickly level out, if there is even any actual difference now. Jap cars were cheap once, now they are expensive. Go figure.

If we do assume the Koreans have an advantage, can anyone suggest how this has been achieved? I recall Japan's industrial leap was basically based on bullying the workforce and a unnatural loyalty to rebuilding the country post ww2. Have the Koreans a similar model, does that change the ownership experience?

"In many occupations you are not trained and left for the next 40 years plus without continous training so why should driving be any different."

As with most things in life I improve with age, experience and practice. I get better and better with every mile I drive. I am a far better driver now than I was as an idiot 17-year-old. I don't need someone sitting next to me telling me "hands at ten to two" and other irrelevant rubbish when I'm trying to negotiate a 4-lane roundabout in Warsaw that has trams, buses, cars and pedestrians wizzing around it.

If you'd spent two decades sleeping your way around London would you want your O-level biology teacher showing how you should be putting a condom on?

Nonsense.

(I'm not saying I never make mistakes - I have two children)

Technical matters: 99 1.4 Problem ticking over, PLEASE HELP!! (ricey)

Hi,

Over a year a go my Clio 1.4 RT randomly cut out as I pulled up to a junction. After restarting the engine, the revs would drop and the engine cut off, it wouldn't hold. After my mechanic had it for about 3 weeks and replaced the idle control valve, which apparently blew up on a cold start and he had to clean and replace my old one, it was returned. He told me it was a problem with the ECU and that it wasn't worth fixing. Every morning, for over a year, on a cold start the revs wouldn't stick and it would cut out until the engine was warm. Almost every time I pulled up to a junction or traffic lights the revs would cut out. 3 months ago a mechanic who is a friend of mine took it in for some work needed for my MOT. He ran a diagnosis on it which showed up as, 'idle control valve open circuit'. He told me he would be able to fix it so he, again, replaced the idle control valve. It then wouldn't tick over at all! He replaced the old valve but the car would randomly rev up and wouldn't pass emitions test. I therefore had to declare it SORN as I couldn't tax it! He removed the ECU and sent it to Renault who reported no fault, informing him it would be the wiring. I’ve now been without a car for 3 1/2 months and he doesn't know what to do now. I can’t even use it for part-ex or scrap page scheme and I’m at my wits end!! Please does anyone know what I can do or try next?? The, KTS, (I think) the diagnosis computer shows 'Idle control valve open circuit' that’s all I know. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Adam Rice

Discussion: Speedometer / Milometer margin of error (Bagpuss)

The manufacturers do set the speedos to over read. Modern car instruments are designed with various parameters which could potentially be tweaked to under read or over read. In practice, the only variable which is adjusted is the tyre/ wheel combination which is set automatically by commisioning software at the time of manufacture of the vehicle.

If you change your tyre/ wheel combination you can have this variable reset by the main dealer. There are companies in Germany, for those so inclined, who will tweak your electronic speedo to make it read (theoretically) 100% accurate.

Did I do the right thing, he thinks? Only 40 mpg, and none of that mid-range oomf that the Mondy had? I sure do miss that. And then remembers the disturbing conversation with the chap in the Delphi diesel place, his depiction of interesting failure scenarios he'd seen, and his seemingly encyclopaedic knowledge of the ins and outs of car warranty schemes. It only takes a single misfuel, you know... )

40mpg and simplicity will do, I think.

I have had a power problem with my 2001 130 tdi sport for two years now. first time it happened I had driven hard for 40 miles and it went into limp mode, I drove another 90 miles and stoped in a garage for fuel. after paying the car was back to normal. this started to happen more and more often but it only happens if I go over 70mph. i found that by quickly switching the ignition off then back on again it resets the problem and is ok. the frequency is now so offten that i really can only drive at less than 70mph in order to keep full power. the car has been serviced regularly. there are no lights that come on. now i only drive at below 70mph and realy have a problem. i would like to sort the problem so if anyone knows what the problem is that would be great.
Gary

>> >> Assume for the sake of argument a tyre with a radius of 30 cm
>> which
>> >> then wears 5 mm so that it has a radius of 29.5 cm. That's
>> a
>> >> 1.7% smaller circumference so for a given speedometer reading the car will actually be
>> going
>> >> more slowly.
>>
>> your argument is not valid becuase you have chsoen a deliberaterly small tyre radius. What
>> is it a dinky car? Work out a better proportion of tread to tyre.
>>
>>

?? I chose 30 cm because that is the radius of my Volvo's tyres. They measure approximately 2 feet across - look on your school ruler, 12" = 30 cm.
Volvo estates are not dinky cars!
