Cars As Cheap As They’ll Ever Be At Auction Today

Fri, 6 Nov 2009 14:49

Auction prices are now about as low as they can go.

18 years experience of the same auction has taught me that, whatever the economic situation, November is basement level and prices start to rise back to the penthouse suite in January.

Right now the big fleets, including those owned by banks, are realising their vehicular assets. How else are they going to pay their Christmas bonuses? But once they’ve got enough in the kitty they’ll be hanging on to remaining stocks and, sure as day follows night, they’ll get more for them in the new year.

Fiesta 1.2 Style Climates are one of the barometers. And I don’t think you’ll buy an 8k mile 2008/58 for £5,600 again until maybe next March or April. Or how about £6,000 for an 08 Astra 1.7CDTI 100? Or £2,650 for an 06 Astra CDTI 100 estate? Or £3,150 for an 06 Citroen 1.6HDI VTR+ Coupe? Or £5,700 for an 06 Honda Civic 1.8 I-VTEC SE? Or 4,000 for a 2005/55 Jaguar X-Type diesel SE?

£34,900 paid for a 15k mile 2007/57 Range Rover 3.6 TDV8 was exactly half the (highly profitable) new price two years ago.

Not everything is rock bottom. Current model Mondeo are seen as a class above the Mk III, and a strong £9,700 was paid for a two-year-old 2.0TDCI 140 Ghia. While someone made a mistake and paid £7,450 for a 2006/56 R50 MINI Cooper thinking it was an R57. And a 2008/58 Focus 2.0TDCI 110 Zetec estate with ‘Auto Clutch’ bid low only because bidders didn’t realise it was a Powershift.

But the bargains are there, just like November 2008. As I wrote last Friday, if you want a cheap car I don’t think you’ll do better than to buy it over the next couple of weeks.

Here’s the list. As usual, ‘s’ means sold. ‘p’ means top provisional bid, ‘pc’ means provisional, but close. ‘n/s’ means not sold. ‘n/w’ means miles not warranted. ‘MNW’ means unknown mileage. ‘dmg’ means damaged. D/R means damaged and repaired. ‘fl’ means facelift. Extras like ‘lthr’ and ‘sat’ are specified when they are not standard.
