Bargain Time Has Started at Auction
I don’t think it’s going to last long. Probably no more than 2 – 3 weeks. But prices have now dropped, though I don’t see them dropping much further.
At low borrowing rates, the financial institutions that own most fleet cars can afford to hang on to them until prices almost inevitably rise in January when the oracles predict there will be a shortage of good used cars.
Right now, traders are buying to sell now, so it’s a bit of a stand-off against the fleets, who are letting some cars go, but holding on to others. By about mid November, traders will be prepared to buy to hold cars in stock until January, so prices could start to rise again then.
Meanwhile, here are some of the bargains I saw today. The lists below include provisionals, so you can see the bids at which the fleets would not let the cars go. I think you would need to pay more to actually buy those particular cars however long you wait.
A 2006/56 Audi RS4 cabrio was £4k under November trade book, three high mileage, ex chauffeur hire facelift Mercedes W220CDIs were £7,600 to £9,800, an E90 BMW 320dES sold for £6,500, a top spec 2006/56 S-Max 2,0TDCI went for £12,300, bidding on an R56 MINI One stopped at £5,700 (so you can go back for that), a pair of Range Rover Sport 2.7TDV6s were £16,900 and £17,900, an 05 Suzuki Swift 1.5GLX was £3,800.
If you want to buy a car cheaply and get down to the auctions open minded I don’t think you’ll do better than over the next couple of weeks.
Here’s the list. As usual, ‘s’ means sold. ‘p’ means top provisional bid, ‘pc’ means provisional, but close. ‘n/s’ means not sold. ‘n/w’ means miles not warranted. ‘MNW’ means unknown mileage. ‘dmg’ means damaged. D/R means damaged and repaired. ‘fl’ means facelift. Extras like ‘lthr’ and ‘sat’ are specified when they are not standard.
