Saab 9-3 TID any good? - AroundTheBenz

I am thinking of buying a late Saab 9-3 diesel 2007 onwards, can anyone give their experience of this model?

Also does anyone know what engine is under the hood?

I believe this is the same diesel as used by Vauxhall in the Vectra 1.9. Not a good diesel. CHeck out the SAAB and VX owners sites.

It is a Fiat diesel engine also found in Alfa romeo models,as well as Vauxhall and Saab.Biggest problems are associated with the feeble water pump/cam belt arrangement and broken crankshaft pulleys and sprockets.

Quite apart from the reliability issues, it was also unpleasant to drive, with far too much turbo lag.

One of the worst thinks about Saab ownership is the quality of the keys they are a made of a substance that disloves in air.

Never had a problem with keys in 30 years of Saab ownership, nor have I ever heard of it on any of the Saab forums I frequent.

To the OP, try looking at some of the specialist Saab forums to get a flavour. Although I've owned & driven Saabs for 30 years, I have never owned or driven one of the models you are thinking of, so I can't comment:

You have to be joking one of the biggest problems Saab had refered to many times on the vatious Saab web sites .It only applies for cars made after 2005. Both my Keys disintergrated on my 2006 estate and was subject to Saab replacing them for free, also affected just about everybody who had Saabs from 2005.

Well, obviously collos we are both speaking as we find. I've just googled "saab broken keys" & come up with virtually nothing. Perhaps you were unlucky!

I and hundresd more they were made of a rubbery substance that disovled to the touch.

The car was ok though never a minutes bother cheap plastic interior but I had none of the so called GM / Alfa diesel engine problems in 100k miles. In fact the only problem was with the electric part of the steering rack which was replaced under warranty.

Had a 2005 model as co car and then sold it to my dad. He sold it with over 100k on the clock with very few issues. The 150 hp (rather than 120hp) is pretty good.

oh and never had a problem with the keys!

I bought a 9-3 Aero Anniversary, 57 plate 2007 (pre facelift model) almost 2 years ago now. I had hanckered after one of these for a while. It's a 2.0T (210hp) with a Maptun tune (to 255 hp and 360Nm).

When I was actively involved in motorsport I knew a number of people over the years who had various Saabs. My recollection is that everyone who's had one loved it.

A girl friend of mine has a 52 plate 2.2 diesel model which she's had for about 6 years now and has something like 130k on the clock. She loves hers and it was having a drive of it that reignited the spark for me. It rides and handles well. Very comfy overall (more 'comfy' than mine, which is firm). They all have very good seats.

They are very quiet - no surprise really as there is loads of rubber around the doors! The doors actually need quite a firm pull to shut them properly. Mine has the 6 speed box (I imagine the 1.9d does too on later ones) which means the motor is whisper quiet on the motorway. There's only road noise coming in really - more on mine (235/45/17 tyres) than on my friends (16 inch wheels - don't know the size).

They are very easy to drive. You feel right at home in them as soon as you get in. All the controls are easy and natural. the steering is light, but the car responds as you'd expect so punting it about with accurate placement is a joy. Ok mines the Aero, but it's rock solid on the tarmac up to very high speeds. I've no reason to believe the other models wouldn't be. Brakes are phenominal.

Interior space is good. I have two teenage lads and they are very happy in the back.
The boot is remarkably large for a compact saloon, both deep and long.

You can't argue with Saab safety. Loads of airbags, side protection and a strong superstructure tested to withstand elk impact! Mine has traction and esc - don't know if that's standard across the range or not. I've used the traction, but never had the esc cut in. I found recently that mine copes with very wet roads and standing water extremely well even at speed (only 4mm on my tyres too). I've disconnected the ridiculous swan neck air intake and so have been able to ford up to about 10 inches in nearby lanes.

Mine has the mid range stereo with nav, it is excellent and can blow the doors out! the twin zone aircon is extremely effective too. i actually found myself turning the ac off sometimes in the summer.

Security is good - Thatcham cat 1.

If you do get a 6 speeder, follow the instructions in the Haynes and re-set the gearchange cables (theres a service notification you can download). Then drain the 'box and refill with 2.4 litres of Redline MTL. This improves the change considerably (GM issued a bulletin to reduce the oil in the box from 3 to 2.4 litres, so ignore the Haynes on this and the MTL is way better than the Castrol factory fill).

The deisel engine has some issues, see HJs car by car breakdown.

Yes, the keys have issues too. The rubber breaks down and the key becomes horrible and sticky. I got a new key, complete and programmed, from the dealers for about £114 iirc, which I thought was reasonable. I've also had a cheap plastic case off eBay for one of my others.

I've found servicing easy enough. I'm about to change all 4 discs at 52k (but it lived around Glasgow for 3 years 40k) and they are easy enough.

A good write up ,I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but in my opinion they are a lovely looking car I will always turn to look at a Saab most cars I would not give a second glance.

Purely for performance, I considered a 9-5 (even Clarksone liked them) but I think the 9-3 is better looking and more evenly proportioned and it was easy enough to get a tune (it goes like stink now). I also think it's a more "complete" car, judging by various write ups.

It pains me that they've gone out of business. The car is very very good and they have a huge following all over the world.

aux input? yes, the stereo has an aux input. I use mine for a Pure Highway.

But you quote the bit about the tune which makes me wonder if you're asking about how you tune them. That's done via the OBDII port.

Interesting. Nice to know that you can plug in a DAB radio on the 9-3's. I'm not sure that the 9-5's have this.

I only quoted part of your message so that you would notice that you were being replied to :)

Just covering all bases.

Interesting we haven't heard back from the OP yet?

Saab 9-3 TID any good? - Mr Fox

There are a few of the new shape 9-5s on Autotrader, starting at 10 K these are a beautiful looking car, made right at the end before GM pulled the plug. and stll quite a few new unregistered 9-3s the convertibles ones are on from 16 K - quite a good deal if you can get the parts needed to keep them running.

Saab 9-3 TID any good? - Cyd

No problems with parts afaik. It's all being handles by an independant company dealing with suppliers. The MG issues seem not to have been repeated by Saab.

I have just brought a 9-3 Aero 2010 TTid and its brilliant. 53mph and 200bhp with a Hirsch remap. Fast and economical, well put together and quiet. I recommend it

Not the best car to drive, but very realible. we have both 2.0t 210 and 1.9 150 bhp. very quick, good built quality and value for money. we got out at 100k and have done 50k with no problems just service. I have seen some with over 200k
