Micra not start after 2 days of non-use - Clare79
I have an R reg nissan micra which, if I haven't driven it for 2 days or so, refuses to start. It's turning over but not catching. Doesn't seem to be dampness or battery as this has been happening in summer also. Anything to do with fuel tube?

1998 Micra problems. Please help. - Clare79
If I haven't driven my micra for 2 days it won't start. Doesn't seem to be damp or battery as this happens in the summer. Otherwise micra runs perfectly. Once I get it started after this problem it works fine until the next time I don't drive it for more than a day.

Also there is an odd cricket like constant chirping noise coming from engine location when I slow down under 10mph in 1st gear. Disappears if I pop gear into neutral or speed up.

Please help and thanks in advance!

Try a site search on 'nissan micra starting problems' there have been a couple of threads recently. Good luck.

Somebody help Clare - she might be standing out in the rain waiting for someone to stop and help her start the car!

My first thought is fuel pump or relay sticking, but I don't know anything about micras.
Micra not start after 2 days of non-use - Clare79
Hi, thanks for your reply can you tell me anymore about fuel pumps and relay sticking thing?

Cheers

Also did you know anything about the weird chirping cricket like sound when car slows down to 1st gear and is creeping along, such as traffic queue?

Thank you

Andrew Moorey posted this in response to another non-start Micra problem:

"There is a known problem with Micras overfuelling at low ambient temperatures which has been addressed by Nissan in the form of an additional resistor in the coolant temperature sensor wiring which is readily available for about £20 from dealers."

In that case the problem was the car being started, moved a few yards and switched off, then refusing to restart. Could Clare's problem be another manifestation of the same design fault? Or it might be that the temp sensor itself has failed, so the ECU doesn't know whether the engine is hot or cold.

Chirping cricket like noise in 1st gear - Clare79
Clare again with her beloved micra. It makes a chirping constant cricket/ringing noise when in traffic queues in ist gear. Only goes away if I slip into neutral or speed up?
Any ideas.

Thanks

Don't know but my Civic does the same thing...

Clare,

There really isn't any need to repost the same question over and over again (especially all in the same day) Please be a little patient, and I'm sure there'll be an expert along any minute now. Failing that have you tried phoning a Nissan dealership and asking their opinion?
Chirping cricket like noise in 1st gear - Clare79
Dear Dynamic Dave

Apologies for the repetition. I am just slightly concerned about my little micra and thought that because I was not a mondeo, bmw, laguna type owner I could be overlooked.
Tried phoning the nissan dealers and they don't really give you an opinion over the phone, they want to have the ar in. I basically want to see whether it's anything that my Dad could sort out before I take the car in.
I am summoning all my patience and am waiting for the 'expert' to appear in the back room.

Yours

Clare

Dear Clare,

Post as much as you like, it is a free country after all.

Thanks, I just think it's a really good website and I suppose I got quite excited after my discovery of it!!!

My son had the same starting problem, changing the distributor cap and ht leads sorted the problem, a common micra problem.
Micra not start after 2 days of non-use - Clare79
Thanks! Do you think this is causing the chirping noise I am hearing when the car is idling along in 1st gear? This noise stops when popped into neutral or I speed up. Could it be the HT lead breaking down?

Thank you

Clare

Someone i know owns an older micra (M Reg) this also had starting problems when left for a couple of days. It turned out to be a faulty lambda probe. As for the chirping noise it sounds like there is something wrong with your gearbox( if it only does it in first gear ).
Micra not start after 2 days of non-use - Clare79
Hi, someone replied and reckons it's the distributor cap and HT leads. Do you not think that the chirping noise could be related, perhaps the leads breaking down?
Micra not start after 2 days of non-use - cos
I don't think they are related because the noise should happen in neutral and in any gear.
Micra not start after 2 days of non-use - Clare79
Oh...so is it a problem with 1st gear and is that costly. Worried.
Micra not start after 2 days of non-use - cos
It could be..its hard to say without looking at it myself. You need to get a qualified person to look at it really. As for the starting problem if all else everyone has suggested fails, then get the lambda probe tested.

The starting problem is likely to be as already discussed. They are relatively cheap options to try out. See if they work.

Now the "chirping" noise:

How many miles has the car done?

Has the clutch ever been replaced? If so, how many miles ago?

When stationary, do you habitually keep the car in gear with the clutch pressed down?

While driving, do you habitually rest your foot on the clutch pedal?

As you may have guessed, I am hinting that the "chirping" noise cause is the clutch/gearbox. Quite likey a worn clutch release bearing. If your Dad cannot diagnose it from the sound, you will need to take it to a garage - look up whether any gearbox specialists are listed near you in HJ's FAQ1 or the good garages section on this web site.
Micra idling chirping noise - Clare79
The car has done 40,300 miles.
To my knowledge the clutch has never been replaced, I only bought it second hand in February and it had had a full service and MOT.
When stationary, if I am waiting a long time, I put the car in neutral, release clutch and put on handbrake.
I do not rest my foot on clutch pedal when driving.

Does that info help?

Thank you for your replies.
Micra idling chirping noise - cos
If the clutch release bearing is worn then the noise will only occur when pressing the clutch pedal down.
Micra idling chirping noise - Mark (RLBS)
Cos,

On an old Cortina I used to have, the release bearing only went quiet when I put my foot on the clutch. The rest of the time it made a horrible noise.

It was def. the bearing since the problem went away when I replaced it.

Micra idling chirping noise - Clare79
Is this expensive Mark? I'm in the process of buying a house and this the last thing I need!!!
Micra idling chirping noise - cos
What type of clutch did you have? The bearing should only be loaded when the release lever is pushed onto the pressure plate(on a standard clutch set up)
Micra idling chirping noise - cos
Did you replace the whole clutch set up. I have seen before pressure plate bolts coming loose, this causes a horrible noise until the clutch pedal is depressed.
Micra idling chirping noise - Clare79
Sorry, I really don't understand what you're saying. The clutch has never been replaced I don't think. It started making this noise at the end of October when I was in a traffic queue.
Micra idling chirping noise - cos
What everyone is saying is you might need a new clutch. ouch!
Micra idling chirping noise - Clare79
It's fine when driving, no judders or anything. Just when creeping, intermittenly.
Micra idling chirping noise - Dynamic Dave
Just a thought, the noise you're hearing at slow speeds, could it be the CV joint bellows rubbing lightly together creating a squeak, or even the front brakes sqeaking? Not so noticable when you speed up as the noise of the engine would drown it out.
Micra idling chirping noise - Clare79
Oh I have no idea. I'm just sitting here sweating. Very worried and concerned, no ideas baout cars, clutches, squeaks.
Micra idling chirping noise - Dynamic Dave
How long has it been making the noise? Is it only recently, or has it got worse over a period of time? If it hasn't got any worse, I wouldn't worry about it until it does get worse. The small and intermitant faults are the hardest to diagnose. When they're more pronounced and regular, a lot easier to find.

My mates Carlton gearbox has been making a rumbling noise for the last 30,000 miles (its done 250,000 miles in total) Garage told him its good for at least another 40,000 miles before it needs open wallet surgery.
Micra idling chirping noise - Clare79
It's been making the noise since the end of October and hasn't got worse. The car runs fine otherwise, it's a lovely little thing. I'm just worried because I have no idea about cars, about to buy a house and really don't need to be spending money on clutches and gearboxes etc. I just phoned a mechanics who specialise in nissans and he says it doesn't sound like the clutch but a bearing problem.
Micra idling chirping noise - Dynamic Dave
Mark,

Ditto on my old mk2 Cavalier. Made even worse noise when you put your foot under the clutch pedal and lifted it up.
Micra idling chirping noise - cos
The bearing does operate all the time but in theory should get more noisey when under load.
Micra idling chirping noise - eMBe {P}
Clare79: Haynes repair manual states that the noise could be due to
1. worn clutch release bearing (if noise apparent with clutch pedal depressed, possible less when released)
2. other clutch internal parts worn/faulty
3. gearbox input shaft bearings worn (if noise apparent with clutch pedal released but not when depressed).

I agree with some comments by others here: if you can stand the noise, it is unlikely that there is anything wrong that you need to worry about - just keep going until the symptoms are much more obvious that the car needs fixing. If you can't stand the noise, have it investigated and fixed.

Post back on this thread in a few weeks to let us know any developments.
Micra idling chirping noise - Richard Turpin
I don't suppose it's something stupid like a loose fan belt. they squeek/squeal when you put your lights on because there is more effort required from the alternator. I suppose a chirping noise could be the same sound as a short squeal. Open the bonnet and push it with your finger. It should be tight. If not get it tightened. Should cost £5 cash to a moron at kwikfit.
