Does anyone know if it's possible to get a retro-fit electronic cruise control for my Skoda Octavia (2001) SDi? It has an electronic speedometer (i.e. drops to 0 if you switch ignition off), and a "drive-by-wire" accelerator, no physical cable linking pedal to engine.
Surely it should just be a "plug-in" module with a set of dash controls, (set, resume, cancel, +, - ?)

Try a Skoda or VW/Audi/SEAT dealer. Normal aftermarket cruise controls may not fit drive-by-wire systems so a plug-in module from the vehicle's manufacturer is probably the only answer.

from what I have read on some forums (no direct experience I\'m afraid) it sounds like the basic functionality is often built into the cars ecu - all that may be necessary is to fit the stalk, plug it in and switch on the service using the appropriate vag diagnostic tool.

For an alternative to vag dealers it may be worth talking to some of the chipping companies around try

the sdi is not listed but it doesn\'t sound like there is a big difference between the different models

Thanks very much Arfur, I go thru Bicester a couple of times a week, I'll drop in on them. Very helpful!

This was something discussed in Diesel Car magazine a few years back.

Your dealer will be able to sort you out; seemingly it is indeed a case of buying the appropriate stalk, fitting it and enabling the ecu. Not much more than that and no too expensive apparently.

At the time the correspondence was centred around the fact that the Skoda dealer was switched on (pun intended) enough to know that this modification also would work on a VW, whereas the VW dealer denied all knowledge. Hope that helps,

The answer is yes. Try these 2 links, although you may find that the second is not available for a while:

Crikey, £56 for the parts, or £275+VAT fitted? I could do it myself, but if I screw it up and spend a day or two sorting it out, I'll lose more than I save... I might just as well pay someone who's done it before!
I really thought it was just a case of plugging a new stalk in and enabling the ECU, I had no idea a) that all that extra wiring needs threading through, or b) that the steering wheel and airbag need to come off to change the stalks! And I can do without removing the wiper mechanism too...
Thanks very much for your help on this one, now I know it can be done.
