i thought that if they "interfered" with a signal, then they are illegal...ie a detector actively "looks" for a signal on a certain band.
But a gps device basically just points to a location....just happens to be a speed camera etc ..
.i of course may be wrong.
|
GPS devices locate 'locations' not 'devices' so they are not illegal. Anything which detects radar emissions and warns you of them is, or soon will be, illegal
|
|
No storme that's what I thought too, you can't buy them from Argos anymore but there's plenty available on the net. Supported by this page of the infamous pepipoo..... www.pepipoo.com/Roadside_radar.htm (not sure if the law's been changed since this was written, so I may be wrong)
|
I thought the law was still to be changed;if it only receives a signal-legal;if it transmits a signal-illegal.

Nope - thats not right. Reception of the signals is illegal. There was confusion, but the law was changed.

I've found the Road Safety Act 2006. Commencement dates aren't clear.
|
Road Safety Act 2006 received Royal Assent on 8th November 2006 at which date it brought in :
Section 51 - De -regulation of power in relation to Level Xings
section 58 - Minor corrections
Section 60 - Power to make amendments.
On 8th Jan 2007 following came into force:
Section 1 - Road grants
Section49 - Disclosure to foreign auithorities of licensing and registration details.
Section 18 which outlaws radar detections devices etc has yet to receive its commencement order so not yet an offence but coming.
At the moment they are up their eyes in consulation stage which ends at the end of this month regarding power of VOSA to issue FPN, Graduated Fixed Penalties and dealing with foreign offenders at the road side.

Damn! Oh well..........
Guess I better get a Raod Angel or somesuch.
|
They're still legal here in New Zealand, and very useful they are too. But I wouldn't put it past our nanny-state to try and bring in a similar law to ban them. Having said that, we are much more tightly controlled on speeding than in UK. There are no inter-city motorways, just open roads. Open road speed limit is 100km/h and is vigorously enforced.
|
They are still for sale in Aldi and Halfords as of yesterday and as far as I am aware they are not illegal till next year in the UK.
|
The one in Aldi is a GPS based one, which will not be illegal. DOn't know about the Halfords one.
It's the ones which detect radar which are illegal (or soon to be so).
|

Or maybe not. There's no requirement to ever bring in the commencement order.

speed assessment equipment detection device” means a device the purpose or one of the purposes of which is to detect or interfere with the operation of equipment used to assess the speed of motor vehicles.”
Wouldn't that make our own eyes illegal as we could see the gatso locations? I can detect a gatso by looking at it. Surely driving through it above the speed limit could also be classed as being in contravention as you're checking whether it is live?!
Surely the sensible answer to radar detectors is to have every camera housing live and sending out radar signals regardless of whether there is still film in them. This would remove their raison d'etre straight away. They have also forgotten that radar detectors are useful for detecting the presence of traffic signals and can be quite handy when approaching road works on country roads where the warnings can sometimes be quite close to the lights themselves.

Not the one I was looking at

Aldi sell the Telx Lite, which is here:
www.radar-detectors.co.uk/talex_lite.asp?source=RD...Q
It's a GPS based system - it doesn't actually detect radar.
Just because it's called a Radar Detector, don't be deceived.

I stand corrected most honourable sir.
