Engine stalls at low revs i.e. when slowing down with foot off accelerator.
Also after car has stopped with auto gear still in drive, engine ticking over
at correct revs, gear shift is moved to park then revs increase to 1000 plus
for a few seconds then engine stalls suddenly. This is an intermittent problem as stalling does not always occur especially when starting from cold it could take over 20 miles (40 minutes) for stalling to happen.
It is possible to prevent stalling by watching rev counter when slowing down
and moving gear shift to third or second gear thus keeping engine revs above
1000 until car stops and engine returns to normal 610 rpm, then stalling will not occur.
All Vauxhall recommended mods have been carried including replacement of I.A.C valve, separator (filter) on crankcase breather, all breather pipes have
been cleaned or changed and new throttle position switch (T.P.S.) fitted.
It should be noted that after engine has stalled the engine starts immediately
on the key.
Can any of you technical boffins offer a solution ?
Two Vauxhall Agents in separate towns have failed to correct the problem
saying that TECH2 shows no faults.

Robin,
Has the throttle body been THOROUGHLY cleaned ? You also need to check that there is vacuum (with engine running) on the smaller of the two breather hoses at the cam cover - if not it is likely that the vacuum port into the inlet manifold just below the throttle body is blocked - just follow the pipe to locate it, but it can be a b****r to get at !

Hi Adam - thanks for you reply but yes, all thoroughly cleaned and the breather hose to which you refer has been replaced with a new one.

Is the IAC valve the 'Idle speed control valve'? That would be my first thought with a stalling Vx Ecotec. Can't think what IAC stands for!

John

Hello John - yes to your question and it has been replaced but engine
still stalled and thinking perhaps the new idle control valve was faulty we
fitted, within one week, another new valve and still no joy.
There must be a sensor somewhere in the electrics thats sending
intermittently an incorrect signal to the engine management - but which
one ??

Has this model got an exhaust gas recirculation valve? If so, this can cause the same kind of symptoms. On my last SRi 16V, it was mounted on the right hend side of the engine block near the distributor.

This is a common problem especially with the earlier auto's (cavaliers especially) There is a revised set up procedure.
Email me for details.

Yes, this T reg model has an exhaust gas recirculation valve, hope to
relace it next Monday afternoon. Will keep you posted. Thanks for info

Further to my previous note, as this was a thread from the archive, it appears that I cannot find his email address, so please don't email the moderators in this instance as we won't be able to forward on your details.

I've moved the thread here in case the person is still using the Forum but under a different name.

Cheers for that guys.
