Thank you TVM and Harmattan.
" I once had something like this " Sounds like a more modern version is what I am looking for.
To TVM.
Because there is no radio, the local scrotes leave my car alone. I would like a radio for Radio 4 and the World Service but need it to be hidden.
Thanks again.

Pye made one(60's) that was half the size of normal ones but I also owned a pre-war Philips where the power unit and speaker were fitted on the bulkhead and on the panel were two knobs and a switch.
|
Yes, I think I had one of these, too.
It was called the Pye Electron and it had an optional matching speaker pod which was meant to be mounted underneath the radio.
Trying to remember which car I eventually let it go in when I sold it.

In that case then, harking back to my CB days, you need a slide mount, Basically the car radio mounts on the lower slide, power and aerial go to make break plugs, and when you leave the car you slide the radio out just leaving an upper slide plate under the dash.
Or failing that get a really old crappy radio from a breakers yard that works., No scroat will nick that.

I think they wouldn't bother with an old scrappy radio, if not then get a "face off" one. or one that slides out completely.
Or just have a hand held portable which you keep in the glove box

Thank you all for the replies. So there is precedent for what I seek.
As it would appear that nothing like this is now commercially available, if anyone knows of an individual or company who could custom build such a unit, then I would be grateful to hear of it.
Thank you.

What car is it?
Does it already have speakers?
Does it already have a radio mounting location?
I am thinking if yes, you could mount a small amplifier (cigarette pack size) which comes on with the ignition in the space for the radio, then fit a radio blanking plate, it will look like you have no radio.
Then drill a 4mm hole in the plate and mount a 3.5mm jack socket behind, then get one of these and plug it on, it is smaller than a pack of chewing gum, but will come through the speakers at the same volume as a normal radio.

Thanks Ashok, appreciate the input.
However, the car has no existing provision for speakers, I want to leave the existing radio slot as a small empty pocket and I do not wish to have any speakers on show.
Thanks again.

Would be cheaper to buy a new radio and side door glass once a month. Will be very expensive.

Hi,
I've found this product - the main unit can be hidden in the boot / under the front seat. It has a seperate LCD display which can also be hidden away in the glove box. It comes with a RF remote control which you can keep with you which can control the main unit. Its an American site, but they ship internationally.
One thing to remember - as far as I know radios made for the US market will not work correctly in the UK/Europe, as the 'steps' the FM goes up in when you tune up/down are slightly different. You would need to check with them.

To be honest your best bet would be to contact a local car audio shop and ask them where they could hide a radio in your car. A lot of car radios come with an infra red remote control, but bing infra red you would need to be in sight of the radio to control it - which is why the product on the above website is better as it uses radio frequencies to control, so you dont have to be 'in sight' of the main unit.

Seriously there is no need for custom built small hidden radio systems. Any independent auto radio specialist will be able to help you fit a normal sized head unit that slides out of the dash leaving an empty hole behind.
But to be honest most people these days use face off versions. because the face is lighter than the whole unit.
They will also mount you a single speaker under your dash (hidden) if you so desire.
If you really really really want your radio to stay in the car hidden, just use a normal size junkyard radio and mount it under the dash somewhere. There can be quite a bit of room under there on some cars. Again an independant auto-radio supplier will be happy to help.
Look up car audio in the yellow pages.

Thanks VR6, appreciate the input.
Had already seen that one but had discounted it for the very reasons you stated.
Thanks again.

I know a guy who may be able to build you something, but it will not be cheap and probably more than its wortth unless you have a fairly new car and intend to keep it. If the car is as old as it sounds, (i.e. no radio at all and no speakers) then the costs are pointless. You can get a radio fitted for about £150 for an extra £50 or so, a decent installer could solve your problem easily.
|
Thank you very much Espada.
The car in question is not old, it has no radio or speakers because I removed them so that the local scrotes would leave my car alone.
I would be most grateful if you could ask your man to make contact with me on
SG-CVT3@uwclub.net
I can then describe in detail what I require and he can decide if he wishes to undertake the work.
Many thanks, Petel

I would suggest you look up the practical electronics forum.

it does sound as if you are after a bug rather than a radio to me. maybe Im just suspicious.

Thanks for the reply Adverse.
Appreciate your input, but that site comes up early in a Google search. Have already made enquiries with no result.
I am seeking a car radio built to my own specifications, if I wanted a "bug" I could get one from Ebay.
Thank you again.

Hello Espada.
Would still be interested to hear from your man.
Thank you and Rgds.
|
How about
cgi.ebay.co.uk/VINTAGE-CAR-RADIO-NEW-STILL-IN-ORIG...m
These type of radios tend to be quite small and it includes a speaker.
I am suprised that the 'local scrotes' would be interested in your standard fit radio and speakers.
The resale value would be practically nothing.

I'm wondering what Petel's car is. Ashok previously asked this, but never got a reply. If it's attracting radio thieving scrotes all the time then it must be something special.
Not wishing to sound rude though, but if it's an old Fiat Panda (I used a forum search to look up some of your postings, and please tell me if I'm wrong) then I really can't see why you need to go to all this bother. A 2nd hand stereo from the scrapyard that used to be fitted to cars of the 80's## would surely suffice?
## ie, no LCD / LED display. Has a knob either side of the tuner display, one for the volume, one for the tuning of the stations, and a row of preset buttons beneath the display.
in othr words, something like www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/classic-car-images/old_car...g

Thanks for the reply Dave, appreciate your concern.
As I neglected to mention in my reply to Ashoks questions, the car is a nothing special one year old Suzuki. The car does not attract the local scrotes ( who would and have, broken into a vehicle to steal a £1.25 Tesco's air freshener. ) precisely because they know, that I do not have radio/ICE in any of my vehicles. This of course includes the Panda's.
Thanks again.

is it a liana, because their profile must have gone up! (top gear ref to anyone who doesnt watch it)
seriously, to assist with your little problem, why not look at it a bit differently. Most of your requirements can be satisfied by an mp3 player.
samsung have a new one, the yp-k5, which has a built in fm reciever and speakers. light, portable and about £120. I think this was the thing they had in the last pussycat dolls video......if anyone noticed the technology!
use a bit of something to mount it in the car - a big blob of bluetack, or the stuff advertised below.
The only downside is no connection for the ariel.
But apart from that, your other woes are sorted.
oh, but dont forget to take it out of the car.
