Hi there ..
Great site! I've got a '96 405 diesel which, although the power steering works, it's still very heavy. I don't know where to start with this one. The air-con isn't working either, so I don't know whether the two are connected. Otherwise, it's still a brilliant piece of kit!

The power steering on these cars is generally fairly heavy anyway, partially due to the big diesel lump. I assume you've checked the tyre pressures and the fluid level. The auxillary drive belt may be loose, causing it to slip and hence not driving the steering and air con pumps as they should be. If the belt is loose, try tightening it and see if there's any change.

THANKS Martin! I was comparing this to an old mondeo MK1 diesel which has a much lighter feel. I prefer the old, uncomplicated diesel efforts so was hoping to keep with this one - these are rarely cost-effective to fix for anything major. Your reply was much appreciated!

Of nearly all the cars I've driven, including Mondeos, Escorts and Astras with power steering, I can honestly say that the PAS on my 1994 306TD is heavier than all of them. However the car does make up for it in other respects, the excellent TD engine, looks, comfort to mention a few...
