Hi all,
Finally made the switch: the Leon went today for £8.5k, picked up my new MG BGT. She's a 1971, chrome bumper in tartan red (not a V8 though- couldn't afford a nice one). Great condition and sounds fantastic. Well chuffed, I am.
Happy new year to one and all.
Alex.

Get yourself signed up for some post-historic rallying, then plug an inverter into the cig lighter and stick an amp behind the seats - that will wake a few people up.

I had one of these many years ago and it was fitted with an oil cooler, I think there are 2 types, 5 rows or 7 rows of cooling pipes. I founf that, depending on the weather and the style of driving that the oil never really got hot. I bought and fitted a Kenlowe(?) oil cooler by-pass system. Basically it put a thermostat into the oil system and stopped the oil going into the cooler until it reached about 80C. You may, or may not, find this device useful in your circumstances. Enjoy the car and carry a box of spares in the boot. I recommend, at least, a rotor arm, distributor cap, plug leads and plugs, and whatever belts you need plus some fuses.

Brave man.
Piano on an ice rink comes to mind !

Reaming the king pins now thats a job
|
A new Kingpin kit from Moss or any other of the parts suppliers is so cheap that there really is no need to ream a kingpin any more!
Congratulations on buying an MGB I would thoroughly recommend joining the owners club!
Oh and the Kingpins getr greased not oiled on a B.GT>> Reaming the king pins now thats a job

|
I thought you only ever OILED the kingpins and not greased them.. but old age...
Parking will improve your biceps and worsen your temper (so I found when I drove one when younger.. would not today:-(

Edit:
yes I reamed the kingpins.. not difficult with correct tool iirc but again age and disatnce...:-)

Remember its rwd ! All the best.

Frank;y, I'd rather cut of a leg and have a prosthesis fitted than lose a Leon and gain an MG BGT

Have you bought your oil drip trays yet?

Of course, you could all look at it as something he's always wanted and finally got.
Crazy thought I know! ;-)

Don;t listen to them - enjoy. I was very nearly tempted last year when one became available around here.
|
There's nothing wrong with a BGT .. just a MX5 is better looking more fun and easier to drive.. and does not rust as much.. and is safer.. and corners and acclerates and stops and....:-)

and....there are loads of them around ;-)

Rather you than me. Enjoy though. I'd add a fuel pump to your bootful of spares.

Best of luck with it. I lusted after my uncles BGT in the '70s, until the clutch caught fire one snowy night between Ashington and Newcastle.
Apparently the car is still on bricks, awaiting restoration, in my great aunts garage even now - I may inherit it one day...
|
Enjoy. Mine (in the mid 70's) Changed 2nd gear cogs - in the street with engine supported by a chainblock on a pair of ladders. Both front shocks, couple of crossmembers. Had to change the head after a flatout London to East Yorks run, cracked at valve seats. Head off an ex plod 1800gt fitted well.
Little brother has a B and a GT and enjoys both although I think the GT is going to allow space for a splitscreen VW camper.
I'll stick to the mx5 though and the bikes.
|
I maintain one of these, the owner uses it daily and has done for twenty five years.I did the telescopic damper conversion for him
which was a drastic improvement. The worst job is changing the engine mounts, nigh on inaccessible.Good luck with it.

Fame at last! A car that seemingly didn't want to leave Ashington? Unbelievable.
I'm sure you'll enjoy your classic motoring. I think more and more people are getting older cars, and are using them more regularly. I read a recent article in Practical Classics about a man who turned down a company car for a Capri 'Laser' which would take its place.
