Drive a few copper nails in remainder of stump, this will kill it off. but may take a while but should prevent toadstalls occuring again

Thanks for advice, but I think any remaining 'stump' is broken up into a zillion little bits. The only answer therefore may be time itself ... (or excavate a really big hole).

wont matter,pick largest area of stump then drive them in.otherwise as roots are still there will grow again

Rather than go to all the effort of excavating soil from the affected area, surely it would be easier to spray the area with a concentrated solution of copper sulphate.
