Searching through the recent threads, I found one referring to 'Mondeo heater smell' in August.
On my '97R Mondeo 2litre estate, the heater fan has worked intermitently for a couple of months, before recently packing up. At on point, I certainly noticed an acrid smell like smouldering socks, and I wonder if this is the resistor block problem as outlined before. However, although the fan doesn't work at settings 1,2,&3, it does operate at full blast.
Could this be the same problem/cause as previously described?
Is it something easily tackled?
Is the offending bit approached from the cabin, or engine compartment?
If from the cabin, are the plastic panels easily yanked apart without destroying the fasteners?
Many thanks, chaps. BigAl
PS I wonder how Jonathan Shaw, the original correspondant, fared with this one. Any luck?

Yes, it is the same problem. The plug supplying the power to the blower melts. The only way to fix is with a new part of the loom that runs from the controls behind the centre console to the blower resistor behind the glovebox. On most that I have looked at, Ford has done a goodwill gesture of half the cost, resulting in a bill of about £40, so this is the best way to go. You don't want a fire under there!

The resistor is within the heater fan housing above the passenger footwell. Definitely sounds like this is your problem.
Cant be too hard to fix surely?

There is a Ford Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for this.
Reference Number: 191/1997
Dated: 1.10.1998
Vehicles affected: Mondeos built in Genk from 05/95 to 04/98 inclusive (Build Codes SL to WT)
Hope this will jog your dealers memory.

Many thanks indeed for your replies on this. I saw a reference to a 'TSB' in an earlier message - I thought it was a bank! Thanks for the details, Charles. I'll print this off and visit my nearest Ford distributor.

ref mondeo heater ballast resistor, the job is a fairly staightforward one.access to the loom &resistor is gained bytaking out the glove box(open the box and give it a firm tug )and taking off the trim underneath which is held up with four push buttons. the burnt loom&resistor can then be seen held to the heater box with one torx screw, the actual repair involves cutting off the burnt loom&soldering the modified loomin place .Takes about 1/2 an hour to do hope this of some help.
