Hi. I have a Rover 414i N reg (new shape).
Last night, came home and parked up by the curb. Turned engine off. Moved a few cars around on the driveway so I could get my car on. (We have people staying). Went back to my car, went to start it.....Nothing!!
I've not had any problems with the car since i've own it. Dont thinks its the battery. Thats newish, plus all lights (inside and out) still came on and never looked like draining. And we dont think its the starter motor.
Anyone got any ideas please?
Regards,
Dave

Try bump starting the car, If it fires up then the starter/pre-engage solenoid needs to be checked out with a meter. Regards Peter

Ok. I'll try that.
Is there any chance the immobiliser could be playing up. If so are all the codes to change it by hand the same or are they all differant ( I cant find a code with all the stuff i was given with the car)?

It bump starts ok. Anyone got a rough price in thier head how much this might cost to fix?

Dave,
If the starter motor solenoid clicks when you turn the key, but the starter motor doesn't turn, it could be the thick braided wire between the output of the solenoid and the input of the motor itself which has corroded away. I've seen this on one or two Rovers.
If this is the case, you van effect a cheap repair by stripping down the starter motor and letting in a length of suitable replacement wire.
If this is the fault you have, then most garages will simply recommend a replacement starter motor be fitted.
A middle course is to take the starter off, and take it to a good auto electrician who refurbish electrical power equipment.

Hi. Thanks for the help.
Me and my uncle have just taken all contact points off the solenoid and battery and giving it all a good clean. Now its working again????
Might have just been a bad conection somewhere along the line.
On the solenoid it was very rusty where the washer and nut tightens up (possitive). Also, the conection (the negative) that clips on it was slighly loose.
I hope that is the case!!

Check the engine block earthing strap too.

I'm sure one is not supposed to bump start a car with a catalytic converter as the rich fuel mixure will knacker the cat.Mike

All checked. Everything now ok. Not had anymore problems starting it. Hopefully it was just a bad conection somewhere along the line.
