If you buy one after detailing your requirements for its use and it doesn't work, then it is not fit for its purpose and you are entitled to a refund.
However, I've used XP Pro for at least 18 months and everything I've thrown at it, from a £13 MP3 player, an oldish Agfa 1212u scanner to my Minolta digital camera has worked without a hitch, whether connected directly to a USB port or via a powered USB four-way hub (it's important to get a powered hub).
It's also important to remember that if you buy a USB device that requires the installation of a driver etc such as an ADSL modem, then this should be done first; the system should then be rebooted and the USB device connected. XP will install it as Found New Hardware.
