One thing i have seen and did quite like was a Garmin GPS watch - looked pretty handy but alas it would only be yet another gadget for me so i resisted.

Rather than a tangible gift for his 18th birthday, why not get him one of those experience days? You know, racing, or tank driving, or a flight or something.
