Can anyone shed some light on this??.If the driver's side wing mirror button is pressed and the "joystick" is used to move the wing mirror, should the passenger wing mirror move as well?. Using the passenger side control and joystick only moves the passenger side mirror.Seems strange to me.Vauxhall told me that this is the way it is meant to be.That means the only way to get the passenger mirror to the desired location is to move them both first then to move the passenger side by itself.

That is bizzare. I can control either door mirror independantly on my 2003 Vectra.

As quoted from the 2003 online user manual,
( vauxhall.co.uk/media/ownersManuals/Cars/Vectra/Vec...f )(page 10)

Adjusting exterior mirrors: Four-way switch on driver?s door
Press switch for left or right hand mirror: four-way switch operates the corresponding mirror.

However, browsing the 2004 online users manual, it's as you say.
( vauxhall.co.uk/media/ownersManuals/Cars/Vectra/Vec...f )(page 10)

Adjust exterior mirror
If the exterior mirror switch is pressed, the four-way switch adjusts the driver?s mirror and the passenger?s mirror, and if the interior mirror switch is pressed, only the passenger?s mirror is adjusted.

I can understand how this functionality reduces the engineering content and the variable parts cost for Vauxhall, by reducing the complexity of the switching mechanism. However, I would subtend the view that this is extremely poor from the point of view of the operator (sometimes refered to as Human Interface Engineering - or some such phrase).

If this were my car, this would annoy me. I have a stack of similar HIE issues with the company Focus I use. Because of these I would never buy one for myself.

Don't know if it's the case with Vx/GM, but IMO this is the kind of thing we will see more of as the engineering of cars is increasingly farmed out to the Far East where the engineers have probably never driven a car before and so don't appreciate some of the 'finer points'.

I wonder if its a LHD RHD conversion thing.

Is this to make it easy to account for different drivers.

Remomber when some Mercedes had an electric mirror on the passanger side an a manual one on the drivers side?

If from scratch I would agree though why change it from year to year.

The 2002 model VW Passat has this mirror link as well.
In 4 years of ownership I have failed to see why it is desirable.

Because they'll have saved about £1 on the cost of the wiring loom by deleting one wire!!!!

I don't see how, they've still got to have current going to the left and right from that switch, and enough wirers to to both up/down and left/right. Same with switch complxity, it surely can't add too much to the cost of the car by being able to control passenger/driver independantly.

It seems like such a daft feature if you ask me.

The Vectra(C), like many new cars, uses a system called CANBUS. From what I gather, one wire does many functions. So I imagine more than one wire is missing, compared to wiring looms of earlier Vauxhalls.

Its called Human Interface Design. HID - very appropriate.

The point behind this is when two drivers use a car they can adjust both mirrors at the same time, you do not have to do them one after another.

After 4 years with a Passat and a wife 12 inches shorter than me it proved invaluable.

Sorry, I don't get this? The up/doem direction might be OK in tandem, but surely the mirrors would need to be moved in opposite directions - ie both inwards or outwards, depending on where the driver sits.

And that's *exactly* what it does. It's a very sensible way of working and I find it works really well.

If I jump in my 2006 Vectra after my wife's been driving it, I simply select the drivers mirror, then move the mirrors "up" (so that I'm not looking at the floor) and "out" so that BOTH mirrors aren't staring into the side of the car.

Trust me - they knew what they were doing when they implemented this. IMO It's nowt to do with cost savings.
