My VW Bora remote central locking opens the driver's door only with the first press and all the other doors on the second - however, although there are supposed to be other modes available according to the manual, the local VW dealership's service department displayed blank expressions when I raised the matter....:-)

Its been reported this is the *second* carjack she has been involved with......Strange huh?

I can program the automatic locks which come on at walking pace from the steering wheel stalks on the Citroen C8.

Stranger in a strange land
|
The doors can be programmed to auto-lock on many of the Mk3 Mondeos, but its not in the manual!
I escaped two hijackings when I lived in Kenya, the second one was quite nasty and at gunpoint. My neighbour was shot (Fortunately only hit by one bullet), just for a crummy old Peugeot 504.
In Kenya there was a clear escalation...
First they took cars off the street.
Then people fitted better security.
Then they took the keys from the house
Then people took them to bed etc with them.
Then they started taking the car from you as you went to get in, leaving you behind.
Then people fitted alarms which needed a code to start the engine.
Then they waited until you'd started the engine
Then people fitted alarms which cut the engine after a mile
So the thieves took the people with them, often for 20 miles.
And since they could now recognise the thieves, some got shot dead, others released miles from home with no clothes etc.
|
Wasn't thier a anti theft device is South Africa, where there was a flame thrower under the car? I can remember seeing it somewhere.
|
where there was a flame thrower under the car? >>
Correct, but it was usually something assembled by the car owner rather than an accessory.
When I was in SA eight years ago car crime was already a major problem; people waiting to emerge from junctions used to be highjacked and forced out of their vehicle, often at gunpoint.
So the flame thrower was devised and, during my stay, I saw film on SA television of a car owner using such a device. The potential highjackers really did have the surprise of their lives; what's more I had no sympathy for them as they clearly aimed to use whatever measures were necessary to take the vehicle.
As far as I recall no prosecutions were ever brought for using these devices..:-)
Whilst I was there we were strongly advised to ensure that the car doors were always locked whether stationary or moving if you were in the vehicle and to take great care before approaching or leaving the vehicle; the advice was particularly relevant for Cape Town and Johannesburg where some roads were notorious for car highjacking.

Marlot, Do you want to let me in on the secret of how to set my Mondeo's doors to autolock?
|
I'm not usually given to writing about "end of civilisation as we know it" stuff, but the incident mentioned above has provoked me into posting, being similar to (but not quite as ugly as) what took place here yesterday.
It seems that around 8.00 a.m. a group of youths were trying to steal a car when they were interrupted by a passing motorist who tried to stop them. According to various news bulletins and reports, they set upon him and beat him severely with wooden bats, and bit off part of his ear. They then stole his car and proceeded to drive off.
A few moments later, they threw the man's 16-month old baby out into the street. Fortunately, he suffered no physical injury. The man is still in hospital. His car was later found burnt out.
One man has been arrested and is due to appear in court tomorrow morning charged in relation to the incident.

Can someone explain to a bear of very little brain what is the point of a system that locks the doors when the car is moving? Wouldn't most carjackers try to get in when the car was stationary?
|
I understood that this system locked the doors when stationary and unlocked at a predetermined speed? ::shrugs::
Better find out if I'm going to order a Touareg.
|
>Can someone explain to a bear of very little brain what is the >point of a system that locks the doors when the car is moving? >Wouldn't most carjackers try to get in when the car was >stationary?
Yeah, but they will have already locked by then wont they! They wont automatically unlock when the car comes to a stop, only when engine is switched off.
|
Having just take delivery of a second A2 the VAG system offers 2 features:
1. Either first push on the button opens drivers door with second opening other doors/boot OR fist push opens all - means you can avoid an unwanted guest getting in the passenger side as you get in the drivers side.
2. All doors lock at 10mph and unlock when you take the ignition key out so they don't unlock at junctions. Thsy also unlock when the car experiences G forces above a certain limit.
The second is not available on the earlier cars - don't ask me what date - and dealers generally don't know about it, you have to push them. We got it FOC on delivery but to change it afterwards they generally want payment.
Sounds like the lady concerned hadn't got it activated, and why did shee need a Toureg in London - the only place you can off-road in Chelsea is on the pavement!
|
Got my Passat 2 years ago. The sales guy told me he had just come back off a course and had been told that the doors could be programmed to autolock at 10mph. The servicing guys hadn't heard of this.
I had the facility enabled as I live just 1 mile from what used to be Moss Side. When I get in cars that don't autolock now I do feel vulnerable.

Found these whilst trying to find how to programme my Bora to autolock (if it's not too old):

One Touareg specification states:
"2 stage unlocking (programmable)" - presumably similar to my Bora as mentioned earlier and
"Automatic locking after takeoff (programmable)"
Presumably once you are in the air the protential car highjacker gives up.....

Blimey I thought carnapping in the Philippines was a problem!
Having been the (almost) victim of such a couple of years back, on my side is the Mace canister in the driver's door compartment, on Growlette's is the 9mm under the seat (and yes she knows how to use it). Thankfully no whiny limp-wristed bleeding hearts here to say poor chap he was only trying to get some money for his drug habit and live and let live, now we're going to lock you up for violating his rights as a total piece of lowlife scum.
|
We have the "bleeding hearts" here because, by and large, this green and pleasant land is civilised. It's them that help keep it so.
|
Yeah well come back to me when it's happened to you squire. Nothing like a dose of reality to help one refocus. Not so much my car, but the implied and actual assault on my person and my property. In my book that justifies retaliation to whatever degree it takes.
|
Many years ago when I was a truck driver I stopped at a set of lights just outside Chester. The passenger door opened and in climbed a tramp. Dirty, smelly, unshaven etc.
"Going into Chester?" He said. "Yes" says I. "Good, you can drop me then."
Rather than try to physically eject him I thought I'd humour him, so drove him into Chester, and off he went with no problem, a happy tramp. (The happiness was an assumption but you know what I mean.)
Since that day I always, without fail, keep the doors locked from when I get into the car to when I get out. It's me that's the automatic lock. Reach round for the seatbelt, press the lock button on the way.
|
better bring back National Service !!! pmsl
Pity the poor NS guys that got sent to Korea in 1953. I wonder how many of them would have been allowed to grow up into car thieves if they had had half the chance.

From
www.fordmondeo.org/
In their forum, security /locking / safety. 24/08/04
[MK3] Auto-locking doors after car gets moving.
There is a lot more info /chat in the item but the following comes from Santo Domingo, Dominican Repubic.
1. Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine
2. Lock the door by pushing in the button below the handle, and then pull the handle slightly to reopen it (Repeat this operation three times)
3. Turn off the ignition
4. Lock the door by pushing in the button below the handle, and then pull the handle slightly to reopen it (Repeat this operation three times)
5. Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine
A beep should be heard
6. Lock the door by pushing in the button below the handle and then pull the handle slightly to reopen again
A final beep should be heard
Basically, once you set this up the doors will lock automatically more or less as soon as the car starts rolling, nominally @ 7kph. You'll still be able to open the doors by pulling the interior handle, but they won't be able to be opened from the outside. If you stop and open the door though they won't relock automatically unless you turn off the engine and restart - basically, it works once per journey, after that you have to do it manually. And in the event of an accident, the airbag system will unlock the doors automatically, so you don't need to worry about that aspect.
Hope this helps but I would suggest you look up the original thread to ensure a full understanding.

Very cool... why isn't this in the manual. This worked first time for me after I'd read the thread on the Mondeo Forum.
Additional information:
- Use the button to lock/unlock the driver's door and not the handle.
- When ignition was on for me it was in position III and off was position II (i.e. not totally off).
- Don't take too long between lock/unlock
I followed this advice and it worked. Also found that if you press and hold open and close buttons on remote until lights flash then you can have two-stage opening too, just like my old VW and Audi's.
So that's three things I've found about the Mondeo that you don't find in the manual... the third being the new Sony 6006 stereo in the Mondeo has a 3.5mm aux-in socket in the glove box.

Have you found the digital speedo?
I had to mention it.

So what is the digital speedo --- guessing it's speed on the digital display? How's it enabled?

Sorry I missed your earlier Q - away on business. I can answer this one though ...
Put the key in the ignition, but don't turn it. Hold down the trip reset button. Whilst continuing to keep the trip button down, start the engine. Keep the trip button pressed for about another 5 secs. Puts it into test mode. You can check the guages and dash lights work, etc just by cycling through the options (pressing the trip button). One of the them is speed in mph, another one speed in kph.

>>Auto-locking doors after car gets moving.>>
My son, who has a 03 Focus, tells me he has had it autolocking when setting off almost since he acquired the car several months ago; apparently it is activated in the same way as the Mondeo.

Only if it has the GEM module (facelifted Focus) much to my chagrin.

Does the new (mk6) fiesta have this, because it does have the two stage unlocking (press the lock and unlock and switches between 1 stage and 2 stage).

I would guess so given the age.

I found this on the Mondeo "enthusiast" site. What really puzzles me is why it is kept secret. Anybody out there any clues as to why Ford do not publicise this facility. Mrs. Etchells is well chuffed as she feels much safer now.
